The Search Journey: Are You Ready to Travel Toward Change?

When it comes to all things search, Montreal was abuzz in October with the latest, greatest technologies. Why? Activate, the Search & AI Conference, brought Solr, LucidWorks Fusion machine learning and UX to Canada. Onix was part of it all.

This included a look at how the mythic "hero's journey" plays a role in enterprise search. Our search experts led a lively panel discussion focusing on the search journey experience during the first day of the conference.

The panel translated how the  hero’s journey can easily apply to a quest for the ultimate search solution. The hero’s journey focuses on tales involving a hero who travels on an adventure, faces a decisive crisis, wins a challenging victory — and then returns home transformed and enlightened. Often, the hero has a stalwart partner who travels alongside, providing support and guidance along the journey.

heros_journeyThe hero’s journey isn’t something found solely in books or on the big screen. It also plays a role in major decision making processes in the business world. Search is no exception. There is such thing as an enterprise search journey, one in which the hero seeks to find data quickly and efficiently.

The panel discussion examined this concept as it applies to cloud collaboration and search with humor, expert insight and great conversation. They used pre-implementation, implementation and ongoing support phases to trace the stages of a search hero’s ever-evolving journey — and how having the right travel partners makes all the difference along the path.

If you missed this awesome presentation or simply want a refresher, here’s a look at this journey.

Search heroes start their journeys by preparing for change. They’re seeking solutions, those they can pair with their business needs. They are looking for the “art of the possible” and how it can transform both their business and their IT department.

While taking these steps, these heroes first need to examine their current situation and needs. They must ask themselves how search will improve upon these and then determine uses cases that support the need for a search transformation. An expert search partner can guide them through this soul-searching.

But that’s just the first step in the decision-making process. Once a hero decides a search solution is the desired answer, more questions and decisions follow. How will content be integrated? From where will it come? How about security and authentication? And what about the overall user experience?

The hero, with help from a trusted partner, has to make decisions about all these challenges before taking the big leap to change, otherwise known as implementation. That’s where the big action happens.

At this point in the journey, our heroes typically find themselves making a clean transition from the sales cycle to the project phase. They celebrate this with a strong kick off with their project teams, establishing roles and project cadence.

Traditional approaches like waterfall project methodology can cause the implementation to slow down an organization’s productivity because these processes need to wait for one phase to end before it could start the next can begin.

activate_boothThat’s why we encourage our clients entering this stage of the journey to use the agile methodology approach. It provides…

    • Increased project control and improved communication
    • A large amount of help through Knowledge Management
    • Assistance with project schedule management

Implementing search in an agile way allows organizations to roll out project changes in phases. It gives stakeholders the chance to adjust to these changes and multiple phases at once, as well as tackling new findings along the way.

Post-Go Live

Now What? Even though implementation with a Go Live event marks a successful endpoint in the literary hero’s journey, in a search world, the story doesn’t end there. Happily ever after comes in the form of ongoing support to ensure you enjoy the value your search solution promises.

At Onix, we provide heroes with onboarding support to ensure the solution works properly. Then we remain available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, long after the deployment is complete.

In many novels, a hero often has companions that provide support along the journey. At Onix, we’re those companions.

We work with search industry leaders to deploy and support their platforms. Our experienced engineers and sales team use an in-depth consultative approach to address your search needs, from planning to deployment and beyond.
