Techie Tuesday: A Conversation with Nickolaos Contaxakis
Techie Tuesday introduces you to a different member of our technical team giving you an insider’s view on what it’s really like to work in the industry.
We share their career path along with advice for getting into tech as well as motivation to get you inspired.
This time we talk to Nickolaos Contaxakis, Senior Cloud Solutions Architect. An avid learner, he also mentors other team members while finding the perfect life/work balance.
What is Your Role at Onix?
I am a Senior Cloud Solutions Architect on the pre-sales side which means that I work with our customers and sales teams to understand the requirements and when relevant, recommend a cloud-based solution that helps to achieve the targeted outcomes. As a senior member of the team, I also have the privilege to be a mentor on our growing team.
What Makes You Excited to Come to Work Each Day?
Every day, I get the opportunity to work with an incredible group of people both internally and externally. Being on the pre-sales technical team means that I work with all aspects of our business. Internally that means working with the sales teams, subject matter experts, delivery teams as well as all the various operational and support teams. Externally we interact with our vendor partners, customers and their consultants.
Tell Us About Your Favorite Project.
I do not have a favorite project. However, I do have a favorite type — any project that takes me outside of my comfort zone and exposes me to new ideas, approaches, technologies and/or solutions to everyday challenges that organizations face.
What Do You Like to Do Outside of Work?
I enjoy being active and love spending time with my friends, family and furbabies. As a certified propellerhead, I find it fun to try out new technologies, especially anything related to home automation. Working with computers all day I relish the opportunity to work with my hands as I take on a variety of home improvement projects. Finally, I have a passion for traveling as it gives me the opportunity to experience new cultures and ideas and of course to try all kinds of new cuisine.
Share Something You Wish People in the Industry Knew.
As this industry is in constant evolution, be prepared to not only learn something new every day but be ready to pivot. Five years ago, hyper-converged technologies were all the rage. Today, organizations that implemented those kinds of solutions are/will be looking to the Cloud for some if not all those workloads. As for what the future holds, only time will tell.
Any Advice for Someone Looking to Do What You Do?
This is an industry that will require you to learn and adapt to new technologies, methodologies and solutions at an accelerated pace. However, don’t take for granted the soft skills required for you to become successful in this field. Like anything, soft skills can be learned and improved upon.
Anything Else You'd Like to Share with Our Readers?
It does not hurt to try and fail and then try again until you get it right or determine that it is not practically feasible for now at least. Every failure is a learning experience that will help you have a better understanding of what is/isn’t possible. That experience garnered will be worth its weight in gold. Just remember to not experiment on a live/production system.
