New Google Maps Platform Address Validation API Brings Clarity

Addresses are necessary to help find people and places, deliver goods and sometimes even to open bank accounts. If there are typos or misspellings, they may be difficult to spot. At first glance, addresses may seem simple and straightforward; we see and use them almost every day. However, those that are not corrected and formatted to local standards can lead to poor user experiences, failed deliveries — and costly customer support.

On November 9, 2022 Google announced the general availability release of Address Validation. It’s a new API that can help improve user experiences by removing address issues at user account sign-up or customer checkout, saving time and money for businesses by helping to reduce the impact of invalid addresses on business operations.

How Address Validation works

Address validation allows developers to improve consumer experiences and operational efficiencies by detecting invalid address inputs and suggesting recommendations using places data from Google Maps Platform. The API:

  • Standardizes the input. It performs tasks such as making typo corrections, street name completions and appropriate locality-specific formatting. This makes it possible to identify address components, fix errors and enrich addresses with missing data.
  • Returns valuable metadata. This is provided for the processed address, including individual address components with an accuracy confirmation level, as well as Plus Code, geocode and Place ID for the address. (In certain geographies, Address Validation can also differentiate a residential address from a commercial address, important for delivering packages during business hours.)
  • Aggregates data from multiple sources. Postal service data is included. The Address Validation API is CASS-CertifiedTM from USPS® so developers can match against U.S. Postal Service® data if desired.

When a user enters the street number, route and locality, the API takes an address and region as input. It displays the response from the Google Validate Address method as visualized content — and as a JSON object.

  • Transportation and logistics companies can assess address deliverability upon receipt of an order. This can help ensure that packages reach the right destinations with more precise address components such as apartment numbers. Drivers can also save time and better predict delivery challenges.
  • Financial Services companies can use proof of address to help authenticate new account holders. By verifying that a customer’s address exists at account creation, companies can potentially detect fraudulent sign-ups.

Along with other products like Geocoding and Place Autocomplete, Address Validation makes Google Maps Platform a more comprehensive address and delivery point validation service.
