Colubris MultiService WLAN System

The Colubris Intelligent MultiService System (CIMS) is designed to seamlessly extend the services of a wired network infrastructure to wireless users and enable a new generation of business mobility applications. Optimized for performance and ease of deployment, CIMS can scale easily from a single site, network service, or application to any number of dispersed sites, services and applications.

System Components
CIMS is composed of a central management system and multiservice controller and distributed intelligent access points. The components leverage an existing Ethernet infrastructure for connectivity. The InMotion MultiService Controller works with a group of InReach MultiService Access Points to provide a range of network services to WLAN client devices. The InCharge Network Management System (CNMS) provides a central console for configuration, operation and troubleshooting of the entire WLAN system.

For geographically remote sites, the CIMS product family includes special InMotion models that provide a turnkey wireless networking solution by combining Colubris' industry-leading intelligent access point technology and a multiservice controller in a single, easy to install enclosure. These InMotion MultiService Controllers include complete layer 3 networking services for direct connectivity to a wide-area network.

MultiService Networking

CIMS delivers on the promise of wireless networking by enabling true multiservice capability. Unified Service Networks. Using CIMS, service providers and enterprises can provide mobile access to multiple voice, data, and video applications through a single network infrastructure. Each service is tailored to enforce the unique QoS and security policies required by the application. Most importantly, CIMS services provide complete freedom of movement, enabling workers to roam without any disruption in service.

CIMS virtualizes the network infrastructure, creating a range of network services with assigned QoS and security policies. Each discrete service forms a Virtual Service Community (VSC), providing associated users or devices with access to one or more applications that share a common set of service policies.

Value and Utility Services: VSCs can be configured to deliver a range of value and utility services. Value services provide a comprehensive networking solution for a range of applications, including the industry’s leading voice telephony and guest/public Internet access services. Value services go beyond the basic WLAN connectivity offered in previous generation products by integrating with external network systems to deliver rich business productivity solutions.

Secure Data Service: A comprehensive multi-layer security architecture establishes a secure wireless/wireline network perimeter and provides the strongest possible data security. The system segments traffic and applies a range of robust security protocols, including WPA2, VPN, WEP and 802.1x. To ensure strong security even when weak WLAN client devices are used, the system can apply MAC address authentication, destination address filtering, and VLAN tags to limit access to authorized destinations.

Voice over WLAN Service: Featuring Colubris Service-Aware QoS, this service offers secure, high-quality voice communications via virtually any VoWLAN phone. It provides fast subnet roaming without any special client software, and supports the Wireless MultiMedia™ (WMM™) and Spectralink Voice Priority (SVP) protocol.

Multimedia Service: Colubris makes it possible to deliver high quality video and other applications that require QoS control over a WLAN. This service includes full support for WMM and Colubris Service-Aware QoS, enabling any client device - legacy or next generation - to access the full range of QoS available on the network.

Guest/Public Internet Access Service: Now organizations can offer simple, convenient guest/visitor access to the Internet - without compromising the security and performance of other WLAN applications. This service features Colubris "Zero Configuration" service interface, which automatically adapts to any client device's network settings, and offers transparent support for VPN tunneling.

In Public Access networks, Guest/Public Internet Access Service enables service providers to implement a variety of hotspot business models and back-end authentication and billing systems. The service can be configured to create a range of differentiated wholesale service offerings.

Legacy Mobile Device Service: With this service, network managers can support any specialized mobility application by creating virtual WLAN segments and configuring Colubris security and QoS functions to meet the specific application requirements.
