Citrix’s AppCompress™ is
a set of advanced compression capabilities that speed the delivery
of all application data, including traditional Web-based applications.
By reducing the amount of transmitted data, AppCompress eliminates
bandwidth bottlenecks and improves overall application performance.
These compression capabilities are fully integrated into Citrix
NetScaler application delivery products, offering complete interoperability
with all other Citrix acceleration technologies including SSL offload,
content caching with AppCache, and numerous TCP and application-layer
optimizations.

AppCompress for HTTP
AppCompress provides advanced HTTP compression to speed the delivery
of Web-based application data to all users. AppCompress leverages
the compression capabilities built into all modern browsers,
including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Safari, and others.
It accelerates application delivery by 2x to 4x for standard
Web pages, and up to 7x for some enterprise application data,
while requiring no additional client-side technology.
Besides accelerating the delivery of application data to users,
AppCompress for HTTP offloads Web servers from performing compute-expensive
compression operations. This enables organizations to serve much
larger user populations with no additional infrastructure investment.
AppCompress MP
AppCompress MP is a multi-protocol compression technology that
accelerates performance for users accessing applications via
full rich clients (like Microsoft Outlook), non-Web thin clients
(such as those launched by popular enterprise applications like
Oracle, SAP and Siebel) and even mobile clients (such as the
Pocket PC). It delivers bi-directional compression of any TCP-based
protocol, including MAPI (email), FTP and CIFS (file transfer).
AppCompress MP reduces application response times for all users,
regardless of whether they are located on the local network or
accessing applications over a wide area network (WAN).
With its unique ability
to provide bi-directional compression, AppCompress provides faster
performance for users sending large email attachments, uploading
files to be stored on HQ-based file servers and synchronizing
offline updates to the online application. It is the industry’s
only solution that provides compression for any application for
any user in any location.
AppCompress Extreme
AppCompress Extreme™ technology
improves upon standards-based HTTP compression by eliminating
the redundancy in HTTP content. It provides a powerful, policy-driven
compression engine that instantly computes the differences in
application data and sends only that data which have changed
to the user. This sophisticated compression technology dramatically
improves the speed with which data are delivered by both public-facing
Web sites and Web-based enterprise applications - improvements
that far surpass what HTTP compression alone is capable of providing.
When a user requests Web-based report data, for example, AppCompress
Extreme automatically determines which report elements have been
added, deleted or otherwise modified since the report was previously
sent to the user. The Citrix NetScaler system then sends only the
changed report data, rather than the complete report. For this
and other common scenarios, AppCompress Extreme typically improves
user response times by 15X. In some scenarios, however, It has
been shown to improve performance by over 40x.
As with other Citrix NetScaler capabilities, AppCompress Extreme
is completely non-intrusive to the application environment in that
it requires neither modification to application software nor changes
to client configurations. It is completely compatible with both
HTTP and encrypted HTTPS applications, and is supported across
all popular Web browsers.
AppCompress Extreme Performance
Independent testing of AppCompress technologies under real-world
conditions has demonstrated impressive application acceleration
for various application content. The charts below represent measured
improvements in application response times for a standard Web page
down load and the delivery of HTTP-based enterprise report data.
